Services and Programs

The Hearing and Speech Foundation offers a variety of services and programs that focus on improving communication and providing the gift of sound.

The Foundation is home to a research and development program that focuses on improving the performance of hearing aids and enabling the hearing impaired person to function better in the hearing world. The primary goal of the program is to measure the physical properties of the speech signal and relate those measurements to auditory perception and speech of hearing-impaired individuals.

A training program that focuses on the Verbotonal Method of communication development is also part of the Foundation. The Verbotonal Method is an innovative way to help people hear and speak better by developing auditory perception. The mission of the training program is to provide training in the use of this methodology of auditory training to special education teachers, speech and language pathologists and audiologist for the purpose of integrating this system into the areas of speech and language development, curriculum development and hearing aid fitting.

For over 30 years, the Foundation has also provided hearing aid assistance to people in need in East Tennessee. In 1999, the program was expanded to include a mission project in Jamaica.
